The Chinese 7th Month festival, Hungry Ghost Festival or Zhong Yuan Jie is a traditional event for Asian countries. It is believed that on the seventh month, spirits and deceased ancestors will be released from the underworld and roam freely on the mortal realm. Also, the deceased ancestors will be visiting their relatives.
There will be Getai or live performances of singers, dancers to entertain the spirits during the month. As one such event, there is usually a front row of empty seats during the performance, reserved for the “brothers” Hao Xiong Di. Different Asian countries have evolved into different varieties over time.
Also, Taoists and Buddhists will perform rituals to pay respect for their past ancestors as well as other lost spirits in the Earth. There will be food offerings, burning of incense paper & joss sticks or other materials that symbolize goods to be used in the afterworld. Clothes, gold and other fine goods have been added over the years as people believed that the spirits will be using in the different realm. On top of hell notes and gold bars, it is not surprising to see people offering credit cards, the latest smartphones and flashy paper cars for their deceased ancestors.
Nirvana Memorial Garden will be organizing an Enlightenment Ceremony and this includes praying of ancestors, loved ones, karmic creditors and infant spirits etc. The ceremony will be held from 12th August (Friday) to 14th August (Sunday).
